Why was the Volkswagen Beetle an icon?

In the 20th century the VW bug was an iconic car. It was cheap, light, and affordable. You could take it on the beach or up in the mountains
You could do virtually everything with this car.
It had enough space in the front(trunk) for storage and you could usually got at least 4 people.
Getting 25(MPG) that's as good as most sports cars today.
Having a 1.5L 1493cc engine pushing 53bhp and 73 lb-feet of torque with a top speed of 82 mph so really not the fastest of cars.
But they sold and boy did they sell.
Selling many cars all over the world. These cars are still very popular in many countries
Having a rwd chassis you could do so much to these cars
In fact most kit cars are based of their chassis. Will I Ams car company "iamauto" is based of the VW chassis as well. People all over the world modified these cars.
These cars are everywhere. Next time you go on vacation to a foreign land look out for these beauties

These were stylish(at the time) and were very popular.

Since the late 90s VW has ruined the bug. Having a fwd girly version and now with their newer body style still fwd. I beg for a new rwd chassis for their next model cause these latest models have been anything but iconic. VW has absolutely messed up their previous best seller. But VW owning Bentley, Audi, Lamborghini, Bugatti, and more it won't focus so much on their previous 1900s icon.
